The $50 Billion Purchasing Power of African Immigrants

Greetings Family,
(Contact Information At The Bottom Of The Page)

It's your friendly neighborhood "Digital Drummer" again...smile

African immigrants like US Blacks, are an untapped niche market within the US population. US African Chamber of Commerce estimates the buying power of African immigrants to be $50 billion dollars in annual consumer spending.

A new first-of-its-kind study undertaken by New American Dimensions and commissioned by the US African Chamber of Commerce (USACC) found this market to be underserved and completely mis-understood (see http://www.99clients.com/USACC/African_Immigrant_Presentation(2).pdf).

The 1.4 million African-immigrant market has been growing steadily in the United States. With this in mind the USACC commissioned this study to identify their consumption of goods and services in hopes of helping marketers understand the consumer attitudes, and buying habits of the African-immigrant market.

As expected a overwhelming majority of African-immigrants (87%) place high importance on staying connected with family and friends in their native country. This data is validated by their high use and ownership of electronic and communication devices such as computers (85%), cell phones (96%), and Internet access (73%),

When it comes to consumer purchases, most respondents cite word of mouth as a favorite influence in purchasing, demonstrating strong trust in friends and family. Other influences include Advertising (mainly TV and Print), Pricing, and Brand loyalty. Most like to purchase in person, instead of online, so they can see, touch, and examine what they’re buying.

African immigrant shoppers are prone to hunting around for the right price and the right product. More than one-third will generally choose the brand with the lowest price: Supermarkets are the most- patronized stores among this demographic group, while discount stores and low-end department stores are the top shopping venues for clothes and accessories. 58% of African immigrants prefer African food compared to food from other cultures. 46% buy products that agree with their religion.

The study found that media consumption in the African immigrant market basically surrounds their desire to stay informed and culturally aware of their homeland. African immigrants spend more hours watching English language media than African language media. CNN tops the list of favorite English-language TV channels followed by ABC, Fox and NBC. The majority of respondents believe Africans are usually portrayed negatively in the US media.

Respondents want to see positive images and stories about their home countries. Many point out that poverty, AIDs, and fighting monopolize press and fictional depictions of Africa. They want the media to show real people who are happyt and content, don’t focus on the jungles or tribal activity and avoid Coming-To-America stereotypes.

Among African immigrants, those in younger demographics are the heaviest visitors to internet social groups. Yahoo and Facebook are the most favored websites. 72% of respondents use email and instant messaging (IM). The favorite African language websites named in the study where Hiram.com, and African News.com,

In terms of aspirations, African immigrants most often describe “success” in big-picture, far-reaching terms. Most respondents emphasize the need to give back to their community, and most send money to relatives back home on a regular basis. According to David Morse, president and CEO of New American Dimensions. “This is a segment with a powerful sense of identity and pride in being African.” These consumers possess very high educational attainment and incomes

About the research: The study was conducted by New American Dimensions in conjunction with The African Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Bruce Corrie, The Minneapolis Foundation and Aguilar Productions. Findings are the result of focus groups in Los Angeles, New York City and Minneapolis and a four-market quantitative survey of 393 African immigrant adults in California, Minnesota, Washington, DC and New York. The study is supplemented by a video snapshot of Africans to personify the findings from the research and bring them to life.

Racism is a seductive mistress for those in glasses houses

This lovely lady is a Nubian – which is why this song by Haifa Wehbe confuses us so much.  this woman is from the same tribe that we originate from. we are all Nubians, and of many colors and hair types. not one of us looks like another. if Haifa Wehbe is a Nubian, she wouldn’t have sang those lyrics about herself. she would have known better than to be so defamatory, about herself and her family origins.

“We are one of the oldest civilizations on earth,” said Isaaq. “Instead, our image is constantly perpetuated as the uneducated doorman or waiter.”

Racism is a very seductive mistress; even for those who are products of it.  Haifa Wehbe  must not have looked into that date grove where she originated, very closely. Very sad indeed in 2009.  a star of the stature of  Haifa Wehbe being openly racist and ignorant. then thinking she can just be excused for it.

The line, Nubian representatives say, infers that members of the black Egyptian minority are monkeys.

This woman is lebanese, and that means she is a product of the Nile Valley. does she not know the truth of who originated there ?  obviously not since her song belies her ignorance to her own dna and origins. She is a decendant of Nubians; thereby making her a Nubian.

Please Haifa, Get a Book and do a lil reading; it does a brain good.

CAIRO, Egypt – A famous Lebanese pop singer, who normally stirs controversy for her seductive dresses and provocative dancing, has now been accused of singing a song with racist lyrics that compares black Egyptians to monkeys.

Haifa Wehbe, considered by many as one of the sexiest women in the Arab world, has the minority Nubian community in Egypt distraught over her latest children’s album “Baby Haifa” and the community’s activists have launched several lawsuits over the lyrics.

The Nubians took issue with a verse in the song “Where is Daddy?” in which Wehbe croons: “Where is my teddy bear and my Nubian monkey?”

The line, Nubian representatives say, infers that members of the black Egyptian minority are monkeys. In November, they slapped separate lawsuits on the singer, her record label and Wehbe’s Egyptian song writer.

“It may not be intentional racism on the part of the song writer, but it is still highly racist and offensive,” said Motez Isaaq, with the Committee for Nubian Issues.

Nubians come from the southernmost region of present-day Egypt, where a culture later known as Nubian first arose around 3,800 B.C. along the Nile and in northern Sudan. It was one of Africa’s earliest black civilizations, complete with an independent kingdom.

Isaaq said that stereotypes of minorities are so entrenched that referring to them in popular culture media is frequently done unconsciously.

“We are one of the oldest civilizations on earth,” said Isaaq. “Instead, our image is constantly perpetuated as the uneducated doorman or waiter.”

Isaaq alleged that Nubians are discriminated against because of their darker skin, and stressed that the community still holds in painful memory the political oppression in the 1960s, when the Egyptian government forced tens of thousands of Nubians to leave their homes and resettle elsewhere in southern Egypt, to make way for the building of the High Dam, 425 miles (685 kilometres) south of Cairo.

Wehbe has in the past tested the limits of a conservative Middle Eastern culture for her revealing outfits, suggestive lyrics and dancing.

But this time, Isaaq said the danger of her song is that it targets children.

“Kids can soak up the lyrics so quickly,” he said. “They could start calling their Nubian classmates monkeys.”

Isaaq’s group has held protests against the song, he said, and is also suing Egypt’s culture minister and the country’s state censorship board for allowing Wehbe’s latest album to be on the Egyptian market.

The Nubians want a formal apology and an end to airing the song in Egypt, Isaaq said, expressing also hope that the action would change the way other Egyptians treat their Nubian fellow countrymen.

“Egyptians have to stop treating us as second class citizens,” he said. “We are the original Egyptians and the country needs to remember it.”

Gunter Wallraff uncovers racism in Germany; thru a White Mans’ Eyes

You Know It’s bad when a whiteman goes undercover and then says it’s bad. check out this clip, where he is applying for a flat.

Apparently he wanted to get the real “flava of bavaria” uncut. in this clip we see him getting sprayed up and then on a bus with some rather unhappy soccer fans; who are not down with his steelo.

this is more representative of what I’ve personally seen in germany when attending sporting events and you are the sole darker face.  many other darker people have remarked to me over the years that they did not enjoy their trips to germany.

in the 90’s quite a few of my african american business associates remarked to me that they had experienced the same cold and differientiating treatment; because they were darker skinned. one was a senior account rep for amex who basically rejected the treatment and shut down a major account for purchases;  due to their lack of sensitivity to minority contractors and associates. he cancelled their ghost card on the spot. bamm.

Clearly they just didn’t realize that He Wasn’t The One..

yeah, been there did that. never again..

Mr. Holder So Really – Whos’ Above The Law ?

What confuses us is why Mr. Holder seems unable to locate the real parties who clearly instigated and caused this crime; when they are appearing live in news venues across the US daily.

Are They Above The Law ?

the basic questions have already been answered, and we know who decided to do it. now what we  need to get is the answer to why. that’s what we all want to know. it would seem logical to us that if Mr. Holder is the Attorney General; and his job is to prosecute those guilty of these crimes against the US – then he should be actively working on making it happen. we don’t see it.

The US Citizen shown in the story at the bottom; was snatched in a rendition. many of us remember the renditions and rumors of kidnappings and black prisons in third nations. apparently the US has alot of friends in eastern Africa. Ethiopia and Egypt; as well as Kenya are all showing up as partners to this gangstyle kidnapping of innocent citizens. there are rumors of others who were involved in the kidnapping and holding; of many individuals at various times, without any redress.

In Case You’ve Forgotten Mr. Holder – This Was August 24, 2009

This is why we think that each reminder we send Mr. Holder needs to now contain a time limit. this must help him to see that we have expectations and need to see this crime prosecuted.  if you say you will do it, Do It.

The people being held in Guantanamo Bay in detention; who will be exported into the US to stand trial very soon, should be able to see that their trials are being held in Fair and Equally Just Courts – as those who created this farce.

Only by finally getting to the bottom of the lies and games can we finally be clear on what maniacal planning a genocide of this magnitude involved.

Today we ask - Mr Holder, Do You Need Someone with a Firm Pimp Hand to Show You How to Use It ?

Do We Need to Get Steven Segal to Get These Ishes for ya Mr. Holder ?
